How to Create a Hacker Video Background with Moving Numbers in Adobe After Effects

1. Create a New Project

  1. Open Adobe After Effects and create a new project.
  2. Go to File > New Composition or use the shortcut Ctrl+N (Windows) or Cmd+N (Mac).
    • Set the dimensions (e.g. 1920×1080 for Full HD).
    • Frame rate: 30 fps.
    • Duration: Decide on the length of the video (e.g. 10 seconds).
  3. Give your composition a name, such as “Hacker Wallpapers”.

2. Adding Text with Numbers

  1. Create a text layer:
    • Go to Layer > New > Text.
    • A new text layer will appear in the timeline.
  2. Enter random numbers:
    • Enter a sequence of random numbers and letters, for example: 0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.
  3. Duplicate text (optional):
    • If you want multiple lines of moving numbers, copy and paste the text into the timeline multiple times.

3. Adding Movement to Numbers

To simulate movement, we’ll add a vertical scrolling effect.

Method 1: “Position” Effect

  1. Select the text layer.
  2. Press P to open the Position property.
  3. Set a keyframe at the beginning of the timeline, positioning the text off the top of the screen.
  4. Go to the end of the timeline and move the text off the bottom of the screen.
  5. The text will now scroll vertically.

Method 2: “Offset” Plugin (optional)

  1. Select the text layer.
  2. Go to Effects & Presets (top right) and look for the Offset effect.
  3. Drag the effect onto the text layer.
  4. In the Effect Controls tab, adjust the “Shift Center To” parameter to make the text move vertically. Animate this property by setting keyframes.

4. Creating the Random Effect

To create a random, continuous movement of numbers, we will use an expression.

  1. Select the text layer and Alt-click the Source Text property.
  2. A window will appear for writing an expression.
  3. Paste this javascript expression:
Questo farà cambiare i caratteri in modo casuale nel tempo.

5. Green Color Effect

  1. Go to Effects > Generate > Fill.
  2. Select a bright green color (#00FF00) for the text.
  3. You can add a Glow effect to make it brighter:
    • Go to Effects > Stylize > Glow.
    • Adjust the intensity and radius of the glow.

6. Add Dark Background

  1. Create a new solid layer:
    • Go to Layer > New > Solid.
    • Choose a black color and click OK.
  2. Place the solid layer below the text layer in the timeline.

7. Create Multiple Rows of Numbers

To add density to your background:

  1. Duplicate the text layer (Ctrl+D or Cmd+D).
  2. Place the new layers in different positions in the composition.
  3. You can change the movement speed or scrolling angle to add variety.

8. Extra Animations

To add further dynamism:

  • Blur Effect: Go to Effects > Blur & Sharpen > Gaussian Blur and applies a slight blur to the text.
  • Scale Variation: Animates the Scale property to make certain text layers larger or smaller.

9. Export

  1. Go to File > Export > Add to Render Queue.
  2. In the Render Queue tab, choose the desired format (e.g. .MP4).
  3. Click Render to export the video.

Result

Your “hacker” video background will be a moving numbers animation reminiscent of cyberpunk or “The Matrix” style. This background can be used in videos, presentations, or streaming.
