After the explosion of April 26, 1986, the reactor hall of Chernobyl’s Unit 4 looked like an alien landscape.
The plates sealing the core had been hurled into the air, the floor was shattered, and pillars of radioactive steam rose menacingly.
Here, just a few meters away, the air was lethal. Only seconds were enough to receive a fatal dose of radiation.
It was the burning heart of the worst nuclear disaster in history.
